BARIATRIC SURGERY: CONSIDERATIONS Bariatric surgery is generally considered when other weight loss strategies, such as lifestyle modification and pharmacotherapy, have not resulted in significant or sustained weight loss, especially in individuals with severe obesity or serious obesity-related health conditions. Established guidelines and clinical studies outline the following primary indications: 1. Body Mass Index (BMI) Criteria: Bariatric surgery is typically recommended for adults with a BMI ≥40 kg/m², regardless of other health issues. It is also considered for those with a BMI ≥35 kg/m² who have at least one significant obesity-related comorbidity, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, or severe joint disease.
