ARGININE MAY HELP PREVENT CANCER AND VIRAL INFECTIONS






Could boosting a single amino acid help your body spot threats like cancer and viral infections? New research suggests it just might. Scientists at Rockefeller University have found that low levels of arginine—a common amino acid found in many protein-rich foods—may allow cancer cells and viruses to evade detection by the immune system. Their findings, published in Cell, reveal that supplementing with arginine could strengthen immune defenses and potentially change how we approach certain diseases (Rockefeller University, 2026).

Arginine: More Than Just a Building Block

Arginine isn’t just another nutrient. It’s an amino acid your body produces naturally and gets from foods like meat, dairy, and nuts. It helps cells build the proteins they need to function. But when arginine levels drop, things can go wrong. For example, colon cancer has been linked to abnormally low arginine (Wu et al., 2026).

Dr. Sohail Tavazoie and his team at Rockefeller University’s Elizabeth and Vincent Meyer Laboratory of Systems Cancer Biology have spent years dissecting this connection. In 2023, they showed that depriving colon cancer cells of arginine caused them to accumulate more mutations. Now, their latest work goes a step further: arginine deficiency doesn’t just hurt cells; it dulls the immune system’s warning signals.

How Arginine Tunes Immune Defenses

When arginine runs low, cells can’t make enough of a crucial protein called MHC-1. This protein acts like a cellular flag, alerting the immune system to anything suspicious, from mutated cells to viral invaders. Without it, the body’s defenses remain silent, allowing threats to slip by unnoticed (Wu et al., 2026).

Here’s what’s surprising: adding back a moderate amount of arginine—about the quantity found in a couple of over-the-counter tablets—can restore those immune signals. “Our work reveals how a lack of arginine interferes with the immune system, and suggests that upping arginine intake could prove beneficial,” says postdoctoral researcher Qiushuang Wu, the study’s first author.

Dr. Tavazoie even points out that arginine supplements could be especially useful for people getting immunotherapy or those at high risk for viral infections. Given that arginine is cheap and widely available, testing this idea in clinical trials could happen soon (Rockefeller University, 2026).

The Science Behind the Signal

Proteins are made from amino acids, and the body uses DNA “codons” to assemble them. Arginine is encoded by six different codons, underlining its importance. Shifts in amino acid levels can affect how cells function, but the direct impact on gene expression has been less clear—until now.

Wu and her colleagues used disease models for colon cancer, influenza, and SARS-CoV-2. They noticed one standout pattern: arginine was consistently the most depleted amino acid in all these conditions. In lab experiments, they found that low arginine led to unusually low levels of 414 proteins, especially those associated with arginine’s normal molecular roles.

What really caught the researchers’ attention was the effect on MHC-1. This protein, essential for displaying foreign or abnormal proteins to T cells, is rich in arginine. When arginine was scarce, the ribosomes—cellular machines that build proteins—got stuck making MHC-1. The result? Fewer flags on the cell surface, and more opportunities for cancer and viruses to fly under the immune system’s radar.

“These findings are exciting because they reveal that consumption of a specific amino acid can directly regulate gene expression in an organism by increasing production of a protein enriched in that amino acid,” says Dr. Tavazoie.

Real-World Results: Fewer Tumors, Milder Infections

The team tested their theory in mice. Animals fed an arginine-poor diet developed more colon tumors, while those with more arginine in their chow developed fewer. When they repeated the tests using models of flu and COVID-19, the pattern held: mice on arginine-rich diets had milder symptoms, and even arginine given after infection improved outcomes (Wu et al., 2026).

“From our genetic models, we knew manipulating arginine levels had a strong effect on gene expression, but we didn’t expect the dietary manipulation to be equally impactful,” Wu notes.

Aging, Nutrition, and the Bigger Picture

The implications go beyond cancer and viruses. Arginine levels naturally decline with age, which may help explain why older adults are more vulnerable to both cancer and infections (Rockefeller University, 2026). Dr. Tavazoie suspects that tweaking other amino acids in the diet could have even broader health effects: “There are no doubt more discoveries to come.”
