Exercise: The Brain’s Secret Cleaning Crew




It turns out that regular exercise isn’t just about keeping your body in shape — it may also help your brain take out the trash. New research from Victoria University suggests that moving your body may be one of the most effective ways to help your brain clear the waste that naturally accumulates with age (Broatch et al., 2026).

Here’s the deal: our brains have a built-in cleaning crew, known as the glymphatic system. This system works hardest when we’re asleep, washing away the day’s mental debris and keeping our minds sharp (Iliff et al., 2012). Dr. James Broatch and his team dug into the science behind this process and found that exercise seems to support this cleanup operation in several ways: it helps us sleep better, quells inflammation, and keeps our blood vessels healthy — all of which are crucial for brain health, especially as we get older (Broatch et al., 2026; Chen et al., 2016).

The findings, published in Trends in Neurosciences, were based on a large body of studies in both humans and animals (Broatch et al., 2026). While the details are still being ironed out (and Dr. Broatch is already working on the next round of research), one thing is clear: exercise kickstarts important changes in the body that help the glymphatic system do its job.

These changes include lowering blood pressure and keeping blood vessels flexible, firing up the brain’s neurons, tamping down inflammation, and even dialing down stress hormones like norepinephrine (Broatch et al., 2026; Chen et al., 2016; Radak et al., 2016). Exercise also makes it easier to slip into deep, restorative sleep — prime time for brain cleaning (Ma et al., 2019).

So, why does this matter? As we age, we become more vulnerable to cognitive decline, including dementia and Alzheimer’s. Every year, more than 10 million people are diagnosed worldwide (World Health Organization, 2024). There’s no cure — but keeping your brain’s waste removal system humming might help slow down or even stave off those changes (Broatch et al., 2026; Iliff et al., 2012).

Dr. Broatch puts it like this: “If we don’t give our brains a chance to clear out the junk, that buildup can be harmful, especially as we get older. And since good sleep gets harder to come by with age, we wanted to know if exercise could help fill the gap” (Broatch et al., 2026).

The answer, so far, looks promising. Exercise seems to support brain health in several ways — through better sleep, healthier blood vessels, and reduced inflammation (Broatch et al., 2026; Chen et al., 2016). But there are still questions: What’s the ideal amount of exercise? Which kinds are best? Should the advice change for people who already have cognitive issues?

For now, Dr. Broatch has some simple advice: move more, and move often. “If nothing else, let this be your nudge to get your heart rate up every day. The habits you build now will pay off as you age” (Broatch et al., 2026).

Bottom line? Your next workout might be the boost your brain needs to stay sharp — and clean house.
